The Girls of Shady Spring Stables (Ohio Equine Photographer)

I returned to Shady Spring Stables to photograph their beautiful Gypsy Vanner mares.  This time it was warm and sunny!  Enjoy!

Segway in the Snow

I had the great honor to meet the gorgeous buckskin Gypsy Vanner Stallion Segway and photograph him.  Segway is an up and coming 3 year old stallion.  Keep your eyes on him, he’s going places!  He’s owned by Shady Spring Stables in Troy Ohio.  We got this shoot in on the very last good snowfall we had this past winter.  Just in the nick of time, the snow was melting and was very wet!  I’m glad we were able to do it.  I’ll be visiting Shady Springs again soon to photograph some of their mares.  Can’t wait!  In the meantime, enjoy these photos.

Horses in the Snow (Ohio Equine Photographer)

I went out to visit my friend Kim and her farm, Crosswind Farm Paints, for a day of fun in the snow!

Emma & Lucy

I met up with Emma & Lucy (Lucy is the horse) at Otterbein Equestrian Center the other night. Emma bred and raised Lucy, now 5 years old. Lucy is a not too common gray and white paint. The pair train in eventing together. What brave souls! We all know what a tough sport eventing is: 3 days, 3 different tough sports: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, all requiring different skill sets. I have much respect for those that compete in that sport! Anyway, enjoy the photos.

I’m back from Mexico!

I have been MIA from this blog. So sorry! Well, this time I have an excuse! I was in the beautiful Riviera Maya Mexico shooting a wedding for one of my equine clients. Wedding images to come later. Today I am sharing some images from Tulum, where there are Mayan ruins right on the ocean! Talk about gorgeous! I really did not take that many personal photos while in Mexico. I had planned on it. But after sleeping in just about every day (except wedding day), the light at mid-day was just no good. So I’d say to myself “I’ll come back closer to evening when the light is better.” Well, it just never happened. Between that and not wanting to carry my heavy cameras and lenses around all day, I just never got to take that many photos. Well, I made sure to take my cameras to Tulum. It was right in the middle of the day but you do the best with what you got. And I really need to get a point and shoot camera! One I can take with me wherever I go so I will have a camera with me when I see something I want to take pictures of. That and I need to take more “snapshots”. You know, just personal family photos, not trying to be perfect or arty, but just photos to remember my life with. That is what I learned in Mexico. Take more snapshots and get a point and shoot! Anyway, enjoy the photos of Tulum. And if you ever get a chance, I highly recommend visiting the Riviera Maya region in Mexico.

CW River of Gold (Columbus Ohio Equine Photographer)

I just love photographing River. He is a truly stunning stallion owned by Kim Stambaugh of Crosswind Farm Paints. Thank you Kim for enduring the cold weather with me to get these snow shots. Visit River on Facebook.

2010 New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix

I was truly honored to be the official photographer for this year’s New Albany Classic!   Photographing the top riders and horses of any sport is an equine photographer’s dream!  These horses and their riders are truly amazing.  Look at how they just fly over the jumps and make it look so easy!  The New Albany Classic is not just show jumping.  It is also a great family day.  This year, the performers were David Archuleta and Monkee Hollw.  They have lots of fun things for the kids to do.  And the best part, it’s all to benefit the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. If you haven’t been to the New Albany Classic yet in it’s 13 year history,  you should try to make it out next year.  It’s great fun!

What to Wear

I get this question a lot.  And it is an important consideration since the photos are going to be around for your grandchildren and great-grandchildren and beyond.  And you never know,  your kid might become famous someday, since they are the most beautiful talented kid in the whole world.  You want some photos of them looking their best when they do those “before they were famous” pieces.  Anyway, on to the subject at hand, what should you wear?  Well, number one, I wouldn’t recommend white.  Unless it’s your wedding.  Then you can wear white.  Or if we are doing a romantic type shoot, (imagine a beautiful baroque gray horse in a field or in a forest and a woman in a white tank and prairie skirt).  You get the idea.  Besides those occasions, I don’t recommend white.  Where ever there is white or highlights in a photo it draws the eye, and we want the attention on faces not on clothes.  I do like colors like brown, blue, pink, orange, yellow (yellow is very “in” right now), and so on.  Layers are great!  A cami under a sweater for women, a tee under a button up shirt for a guy.  And I’m a casual gal.  I really like the jeans look, no need to dress up real fancy unless you really want to.  For group shots, there is no need for everyone to wear the same outfit in different sizes.  Just make sure the colors co-ordinate.  Pick  2 or 3 colors and everyone in the group should stick to those colors.  Also, everyone should dress in the same style.  You don’t want one person dressed up real fancy and someone else in sweat pants.  That just won’t work.  FYI, I don’t recommend ever wearing sweat pants though.  (For a photo shoot I mean, go ahead and feel free to wear them while lounging on the couch.)  What about shoes?  Who needs shoes?!  We’re casual around here, remember?  Seriously, there is nothing better than little kid piggies.  Let them be free!  Shoes tend to date photos, so if you do wear them try to keep them classic, like mary janes, flats, oxfords, and Converse.

Remember, these are just guidlines.  The most important thing when choosing clothing is to be yourself.  Also, I address it on a case-by-case basis, based on what we are going for with the photo shoot.  That is why I have a pre-session consultation with every client so we can discuss these things beforehand and I will make some recommendations.  If you want,  you can even lay out some outfits and send me pictures of them and I can give a yay or nay.  Or bring a few different options along to  your session and we can switch things up.    And I love accessories:  jewelry, hats, scarves, boots, etc.

Any questions?  Just let me know!  I’m here to help.

10 Things Thursday: What to Do With Your Photos

On today’s 10 Things Thursday, we’re gonna talk about ways to use your photos, either ones taken professionally or ones you have taken yourself.   (Some projects may require a digital file.  I do sell digital files of my images.  Make sure to know what is ok to use your professional digital photos for and what is not.  If you are not sure, just ask!)  Let me know if you have ideas to add to this list.  Just leave a comment below.

  1. Scrapbooking
  2. Photo Jewelry.  I do sell a line of photo jewelry using the images from  your session.  You can also make your own with your own images with a few supplies from a craft store.  (P.S. the ones I sell are not made by me, they are made professionally.)
  3. Gallery-Wrapped Canvas, available through your professional photographer.  I totally love this product!  You need to go big to make a statement with these.
  4. A wall grouping.  Again, you need to go big to make a statement.  One 16×20 above your couch or fireplace isn’t going to do it.  I do have some suggestions for wall groupings.
  5. Gift prints, 5×7′s and 8×10′s for your office so you can keep your loved ones close all day.
  6. Albums and/or photobooks.  I offer some very classy & nice albums and press-printed books.  A nice way to display most or all of  your images from your session!
  7. Digital photo frames.  A great option for displaying several of your favorite family snapshots or professional photos if you purchased digital files.  Also a great option for your office.
  8. A storyboard, aka collage.  Professionally designed storyboards with your session images are available through me.
  9. Photo Blocks.  These are a fun little project.  Buy or cut your own square wooden blocks.  Decorate with photos, pretty paper, and accessories.  I started a project like this but haven’t finished yet.  They will be super cute when I am finished with them!
  10. Products.  There are a ton of things you can get your photos printed on through the internet if you just do a search.  Cards, candy, tins, blankets, shirts, mouse pads, key chains, calendars and the list goes on.  Please use your own snapshots for these items.  (If you wish to use a professional photo, please ask the photographer first.  Many photographers, including myself, do not want to see their images on these kinds of items unless it is a quality product produced through their own vendors.  If you wish to use one of my professional photos, even one that you have purchased the digital file of, in this fashion, please discuss it with me first.)

Now, I want to hear fun ways you have used your photos!
